Honestly, having too many goals when you network can come off as insincere. Your goal can be a bit less calculated. It’s fine to just want to get to know somebody because they work in a field you’re interested in. It’s ok to just simply think they’re cool and want to learn about them. Trying to get too somebody out of everybody you meet makes you a user. People can sniff that stuff out. Don’t do it!

As a Career Transition Coach, identifying YOUR purpose of networking is key - especially when attending networking events. Being intentional with the time that you spend networking will get you much further than just networking with everyone everywhere. Instead, seek out those that will be intentional with helping you get to the next steps in your career -whether that be a connection into a company or serving as your mentor. I always tell my clients to also let their connections know this - people have been in your shoes. They want to help!

Networking is the key to literally everything. When I started as TA, the first thing my mentor asked me - was to expand my network. This is applicable for all networks. Since I am an HR - my network mostly consists of people from HR/TA/L&D and from the skills I hire (IT). Similarly , let's say you are from IT - your major network should focus on people who work on similar technology and your competitors / target companies you want to get placed at. Try targeting audience from posts or hashtags, usually those are the folks willing to network and help you with referrals. Network with recruiters, send them a personalized DM or comment on the postings. Comment of famous posts to become more visible and maintain a 500+ connection on LinkedIn.

I've often seen people barge into comments on posts and simply mention all their details there. Please be mindful - that it does not leave a good impression. Always share details on mail/chat. - Some audience , go and reply as "you have not responded" or "reply to DM". It will not bring you to visibility in a respectful way. A recruiter answers to 1000 of such message. - Simply put "Interested" or the word of choice suggested on the post . - Try interacting and getting to know your network . Do not ask for referral on your first message. There was a time I worked for client acquisition and reached out to a lead on LinkedIn, immediately dropped in a request for meeting. The person expressed his dislike and asked me to network first.

It is important that when you start the conversation you have to have a purpose, a real focus on the other person, whether it is a joint work opportunity or a service, today it is easy to detect spam for anyone, it is important to follow the line of professionalism.

Effectively communicating as a career development coach involves a genuine and respectful approach. Be genuinely curious, ask open-ended questions, and show interest in others' backgrounds and goals. Share your expertise generously, offering support, feedback, or resources. Clearly express your coaching goals and values, avoiding jargon. Adhere to platform etiquette, respecting time and boundaries. Avoid spamming, pressuring, or ghosting contacts, ensuring a two-way conversation that builds trust and fosters meaningful connections within the coaching community.

If you're initiating the networking, the conversation is ABOUT THEM. Not you. Keep text conversations focused on getting the video/chat with the person and don't go spewing all your professional details and credentials (ever actually). During the discussion, focus on just listening while they're talking. The more focused you are on a clever reply, the less you're actually listening to what the other person it saying. Ask open-ended questions (How, What, Why) after they're done speaking. When asked about your experience, treat it like a slightly longer elevator pitch - no more than 60 seconds, 90 is pushing it.

Now as we understand that you wait for replies, but it's also necessary to follow up. Very often there are some mails which I archive and with time it piles up. I've had candidates who send me a "gentle reminder" mails. This brings their conversation to my sight even after few months. Don't hesitate to reach out to someone who's offer you had turned down before. It's a professional network and people would understand. Follow ups can be also in the form of newsletters, offers, new discoveries and technologies, or simply details on the company. I used it during my business development days, if I had to follow up with a lead, but didn't want to repeat the reminders.

A quick "thank you" note the day after is always nice to show you appreciate their time! We all have calendar apps on every conceivable device, so it's super easy to use them to make a note to follow-up a couple months down the road. If you see articles/content/roles that may be relevant to their interest, don't be afraid to share it with them.

Here's some advice I gathered as a TA and Business Development professional. - Do not barge in to follow up on comments of posts. Follow up on DM/ Email/Calls. - Do not send multiple follow ups on same day, preferably try twice a week. -Customized in mails always work, don't forget to ask about their day. - Don't be very pushy just because you have targets. As an audience, even I wouldn't be liked to get bothered by a sales call every hour. Think on similar lines. - Network hard and maintain consistency. Post about your knowledge. Become visible to connections. - Always press "support" button on posts. Show mutual supports, comment "for better reach". Helping always comes back.

Give more than you take. That means, - Don't be afraid to make the connection request, and listen intently and curiously when you have that networking discussion. - Be generous with your likes and comments on LinkedIn - the more you interact, the more you build a positive reputation and it keeps you top of mind in your network. - If you see something that might interest your new connection (a piece of content, a paper, a job-posting), don't be afraid to share it with them. Networking is not a zero-sum game - don't keep score, and be generous with your attention. It usually comes back to you in positive ways!

It's our job as recruiters to get you a good understanding of the role through the job description. But sometimes it's just not easy as the scope of the role can be broader. My advice is to leverage LinkedIn and reach out to people currently in the role at the same company you want to apply for. Project manager role at Microsoft? Reach out to them and ask them more about the role. You can also send them the Job description so they know which team is it. They might redirect you to the hiring manager directly, who knows?

A super simple way to both network for yourself AND expand authentically, is to simply introduce others you've met to new people. Especially at an event where most people are there alone, creating an easy connection in the coffee line (for example) and helping intro them to other people creates trust and a shared connection.
