Just don't overdo it or get too cliched.

Similar to overuse of adjectives, however, using metaphors like "bridge builder" without adding concrete examples just adds fluff. Provide clear, quantified metrics that demonstrate how you add vale to help hiring managers understand what it would look and feel like to have you on their team. Just saying you connect with diverse stakeholders and foster collaboration without providing a story or example to showcase that is ineffective. Stories that connect the dots will make you memorable and help cut through the clutter in a competitive market.

Sometimes using metaphors can be compelling when used properly. You definitely want to be a story teller and make it easy for the recruiter to understand your roles, your skills, and your scope. However, do not include dramatic over the top adjectives. You cannot prove things like "hard working" or "Great under pressure". A recruiter will vet your soft skills with competency based questions.

Be careful with the metaphoric language you use on your résumé! You don't want to leave out critical keywords and phrases that will tell a hiring manager (or applicant tracking system software and other AI tools) that you're qualified for the job. If you use too many metaphors, you'll lose some impact. Keep the metaphors to a minimum – choosing 1 or 2 as a theme for your résumé – then demonstrate your actual tangible skills through specific examples from your professional history.

Similar to identifying the recurring themes or brand pillars that shape your career narrative, try to focus on one overarching idea when using metaphor as a storytelling technique. Sometimes less is more! You should only have a SPRINKLE of metaphors/catchy phrases. They shouldn't be appearing everywhere! I generally use them in a summary section. (And even then, I only use them VERY sparingly!)

I don't love overused terms such as strategic thinker or creative problem-solver; in fact, I think one of the best ways to clean up and amplify impact of your resume is to remove adjectives and replace them with quantified facts and figures.
