As powerful figures of speech, metaphors figure prominently in any writing that seeks to persuade. Regrettably, culture can impact the meaning of a metaphor. Terms that are relatable in one culture can fail abysmally in another. Shrewd and wary writers need to vet their material, as well as, identify misunderstandings that emerge from the metaphor's use.

When it comes to change communication, not all metaphors are created equal. To select the right ones, you need to understand your audience’s needs, expectations, concerns, and preferences, as well as the context of your communication. It’s important to define your main goal and message, and choose metaphors that support and reinforce your point. Additionally, consider the situation, the tone, and the medium of your communication. Make sure the metaphors fit the occasion, the mood, and the format. Avoid those that may offend, confuse, contradict, mislead or overwhelm.

Imre Hegedus makes an interesting point in his LinkedIn article "5 organisational metaphors to facilitate change" (August 2016) which he co-authored with Robert Lamp. He refers to different metaphors for referring to organizations: 1) Organization as machine 2) Organization as brain 3) Organization as organism 4) Organization as culture 5) Organization as politic. I like all of them because it allows the change manager to set up a whole dictionary / "change management branding lingo" for the project.

I wouldn't use typical success metaphors such as "Success is a mountain to climb". This often used metaphor lacks creativity. Instead, you might want to appeal to their playful side to take off the overly serious and success-driven "tone" of the change project. Appeal to the team effort aspect of change. Leadership expert @Merge Gupta-Sunderji refers to change management as a bus journey. I like this one in particular because it reflects the nature of everyday life. Everyone can relate to journeying on a bus.

And / or simply make a list of metaphors and reflect on how to use them in change communication. The first one that comes to my mind is "herding cats". When would that apply in change management? When you have to convince a group of skeptical employees to implement a new process.

Ask employees to contribute to your change communication. For example, they can talk about their experience with a change project in a short blog post. Once you have a critical mass, you can leverage the vocabulary used within these articles. That in turn will ensure you reflect the employees' language and increase identification with the change initiative.
