Mediation is often associated with compromise. But compromise is not necessarily a good thing. All parties taking a step back solve the immediate issue, but it also means that they accept a sub optimal solution. Each time people are confronted with the cost of the compromise (a manual feature in a software, an additional paperwork), it is a small pain. The next compromise will be harder. The art is not to share the pie "better", it is to make the pie grow. How to generate creativity and come with a solution that satisfy most, if not all, legitimates issues. Once, we used concurrent engineering: manufacturing could start earlier with partial, oversize design while engineering had the time necessary to finish their work up to standard.
