How can you use LIDAR to improve transportation planning?

Lidar data is pivotal for autonomous vehicles, contributing to functionality by enabling precise environment perception—essential for obstacle detection, adaptive cruise control, and intersection management. Its role extends to mapping and localization, ensuring accurate positioning within a mapped environment. Lidar data enhances safety through redundancy, operating effectively in diverse conditions. Lidar is an acronym for Light Detection and Ranging. The way it works is, a laser beam is sent out by the sensor at a specific moment in time, the beam hits a feature and returns, the sensor can then figure out the distance or range by calculating its travel. LiDar sensors can have multiple “returns” giving it the ability to penetrate dense vegetation. Besides determining the range, other systems are paired with the sensor like GNSS and IMU because the system also needs to know the angle the sensor was pointing when it hit the feature, this is, among other considerations, used to be able to precisely transform the points from an arbitrary coordinate system into an object space coordinate system giving them a meaningful unit of measure.

It calculates the time taken for the laser pulses to travel to objects and back, creating a detailed three-dimensional point cloud. LIDAR data, processed and analyzed in GIS software, can create digital elevation models, digital surface models, contours, slope maps, aspect maps, and hillshade maps. LIDAR data can also be combined with other spatial data, such as aerial imagery, satellite imagery, vector data, and geospatial databases, to create more comprehensive and accurate maps and models.

LIDAR data can be imported into GIS as laz or las files. Those lidar format can be transformed into raster or TIN files in GIS. The contour or terrain development based on LIDAR data will provide more detailed terrain feature or more finer contours. This will help Hydrologic Modeling or other analysis more efficient.

Once before constructing new infrastructure, LIDAR data can be used to analyze potential construction sites. It assists in evaluating the suitability of locations by assessing factors like slope, drainage patterns, and soil composition, ensuring optimal site selection for infrastructure projects.
