How can you use humor to engage new hires during orientation sessions?

With welcome presentation about company history, achivement, company culture, every day work life. Create a funny and unique group of new joining this can help to start funniest conversation. We can share pictures of different departments and different team and team achivement for team bonding purpose and feel more comfortable around their colleagues.

Humor can be used as a practical tool to break the ice with New hires. Factually speaking, whenever I have conducted new hire orientation and used humor appropriately, it has always yielded good results. A few positives being, good connect, concept understanding in an easier manner, new hires asking more questions since initial inhibitions go away and many more. I feel as a facilitator, one needs to have a strong hold on the subject along with an in-depth understanding of the type of humor that would not upset anyone either religiously, culturally or in terms of diversity of thoughts. This might seem like an easy task but easier said than done! So, pick your audience, know what will go right by studying them beforehand.

One of my favorite things to do during onboarding is giving the new hires the 'unwritten rules.' Those are the rules that everyone knows, but no one talks about them up front. Name the things the flow - give them stories of the past, tell them where things got wild and have them enjoy the ride!

First and foremost, know your audience. New hires are apprehensive already. Humor, when used properly, can put them at ease. Use humorous anecdotes about yourself. Use fun and engaging games or activities to help them learn while having fun. With the correct understanding of the audience, you could also ask new hires to share their anecdotes as a way to break the ice. Above all, treat the new hires with respect!

I have found it beneficial to use humor that is fairly neutral in content and intended audience. There have been a number of trainings I have attended over the years where the humor a presenter tries to inject into a presentation may leave out a large number of the attendees due to the referenced material being either a dated pop culture reference or otherwise refer to some niche material. Humor that reaches more people not only engages a larger portion of the audience, but also helps bring your attendees together as they have a moment to connect with each other. Never be afraid to update your material.

Podemos centrarlo en nosotros, ya dar una imagen de proximidad, acogedora y de persona divertida, si nos interesa. Pero en otras situaciones quizás debemos centrar el humor en la empresa, el entorno. Demostrando que tiene una cultura desenfadada e informal, donde se trabaja a gusto y se aceptan ideas nuevas. Si no lo piensas bien y te equivocas en la estrategia, puedes quedar como un "graciosillo" fuera de lugar, o hasta perjudicar la imagen de marca de la empresa.

Creo que ayuda entender que cuando hablamos de humor, no significa solo: ser graciosos. Muchas veces es más bien sinónimo de "desenfadado". Si nos interesa alejarnos de lo "serio", puede bastar con detalles como usar lenguaje informal, emojis, etc. O gamificar ciertos procesos. O hasta promover interacciones sociales fuera de lo profesional, como afterworks, deporte con compa?eros/as, o sesiones outdoor.

I shared a cringe-worthy PowerPoint slide from my early days, showcasing my less-than-stellar proficiency. Think of something light or funny that may have happened to you when you first started your job ( if it's relevant ) and share with the group. You may get a chuckle or two. I shared at some of my orientations how I accidentally hit the "reply to all" instead of "forward" and an email went to the VP of HR and it was supposed to go to my team only. I wanted to crawl under a rock, lol. Well, it actually worked out for me because the VP thought I was standing up to him and fighting really hard for something. He was shocked. I won a massive wage increase for my team
