I would start here. If you aren't the type of person that finds humor in things on a regular basis, then there is no point in doing anything else. If you find humor in making strange new connections, or pointing out ironies, or puns, or whatever it is, then using that kind of humor (YOUR kind of humor) in the subject is a way of showing that you care about it and have passion for it. So incorporating humor shows your investment in the topic. THEN, think about audience. If the audience won't appreciate the humor, find another way to show your passion to them. I don't think it is worthwhile to try to create humor to match your audience - it will feel forced. But absolutely use the humor that you already have that fits your audience.
