1 Identify your sustainability objectives

As a person who lived and worked in the nonprofit sector in Yemen between 2008 and 2019, my sustainability focus was improving access to clean drinking water and safe sanitation services in rural areas. In 2014, we received about one million USD of funding to improve sanitation in 131 villages where more than 36,000 people live. We worked day and night over the years 2014 and 2015 with every person in the targeted villages, including men, women, boys, and girls to raise their awareness using the CLTS approach, which stands for community-led total sanitation, resulting in declaring 81 villages open defecation free and 100% safe sanitation. This inspired us a lot to continue doing so in other communities.

When researching potential funders, also inquire if they know of any other funders that you should consider. I have worked on both sides of this work and if a funder is willing to discuss your questions, make sure you bring up all of your questions.

After you have identified a suitable grant opportunity, you need to write a compelling proposal that convinces the funder to invest in your sustainability project. I usually consider our only success factor is on learning. For me and my team, learning is always the top value we really believe in. The best thing also in proposal writing is that you have to keep learning every day. How many times the donors changed their approach in funding and how many times we had to adopt to these changes.
