One thing I know is "The problem you are facing right now, it's faced by other and might be solved as well" (Yes you can be the first one). So github also provide solution for this, manage technical document. And yes, for now we just need readme.md and using the feature it provide

You can refer from other project to make it your own. But for us, we try to update the readme.md for the package that need it. In my previous project, we made extra folder in project to store image, data, flow and things so we know where to check it with name convention (for eacg micro service project)

All in readme.md that github provide is enough and link to extra source sometime to provide media data. And as other set up in folder, just store it there.
