This is a mistake I made numerous times - I used italics and fancy fonts to make the presentation look pretty. The whole point of visual aids is to simplify and highlight the main context. Using illegible and beautified fonts will not engage the audience. Instead stick to 1-2 major fonts styles and remember to bold it or use a different colour in order to make it stand out.

Before going to the font choice, size and colour, identify how the presentation is going to be communicated. Wether it is a online presentation in a virtual communication tool, a classroom presentation in a large projector, etc., Then, the target audience needs to be identified. If people have accessibility needs, the fonts and visuals should be made to accommodate them. I used to present in my college by connecting my laptop to a TV. I made the presentation, thinking I'll do it in a large place with a projector setup and used calibri with 24 font size. There I was 7 feet away from the TV struggling to see the content I created. So, understanding the audience and the place largely affects the font size, type and color.

Color theory! Never forget to check your color choices. Light colored text should have a dark backgrounds, and Dark texts should have light backgrounds. If you are having a hard time telling if your font is visually distinct enough from your background, try taking a step back and squint at it. it should still pop and ideally be readable from a distance!
