To achieve a carbon neutral society, it is important to assess the environmental impact of products and corporate activities as a whole, not only during product use. Through life cycle assessment (LCA) and GHG protocols, we can understand the carbon footprint, disclose information to stakeholders, and clarifying specific GHG reduction priorities and targets to improve the efficiency of product development and processes that will lead to an overall reduction in environmental impact.

2 How to conduct an EIA for your supply chain?

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for your supply chain can vary depending on the scope, scale, and complexity of your activities and products. Nevertheless, a general framework can be followed to guide your EIA. This framework consists of screening to determine if an EIA is required, scoping to define objectives and boundaries, baselining to collect data and information on current environmental conditions, impact assessment to evaluate and predict environmental impacts, mitigation and enhancement to propose measures and actions to avoid or minimize adverse impacts, reporting and review to submit the EIA report for review and approval, and monitoring and evaluation to monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the EIA.

LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is a method of assessing the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its life cycle (resource extraction , raw material production , product production - distribution and consumption , disposal and recycling). LCA is specified in the international standards ISO 14040 and 14044. The GHG Protocol is a set of guidelines published by the GHG Protocol Initiative. The protocol categorizes your entire supply chain into three scopes, called Scope 1, 2, and 3. The GHG emissions are summed to determine the GHG emissions for the the entire supply chain.

Environmental indicators are quantitative or qualitative measures that provide insight into the environmental aspects and impacts of your supply chain. These indicators can help monitor and evaluate performance, communicate and report achievements, and identify and prioritize areas for improvement. 5 How to use EIA to engage your supply chain stakeholders?

Stakeholders are the individuals, groups, or organizations that have an interest or influence on your supply chain and its environmental impact. These can include suppliers, customers, employees, investors, regulators, communities, and NGOs. Engaging with stakeholders is an important part of conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). You should identify and map these stakeholders to understand their needs and expectations. Involving them in the EIA process is also important; seek their input, feedback, and approval. Additionally, inform and educate them on the environmental issues and opportunities of your supply chain to raise their awareness. Finally, collaborate with them on environmental improvement initiatives and share the responsibilities and benefits.
