How can you use digital marketing to boost sales?

In simple terms, Digital marketing is the use of online channels to reach your target audience and promote your products or services. The tricky part here is in choosing the right platform. To choose the right platform, you need to clearly define what do you want to achieve from the process. Sales may be somebody's priority, Brand visibility or faster customer feedback could also be someone's priority. If you clearly understand and define your goal, you can easily segment your customers and choose the right platform to market.

Analyse performance indicators on a regular basis to fine-tune your plan and assure ongoing improvement of your digital marketing efforts, eventually driving sales growth.

Implementing digital marketing is often a path of discovery and cannot always be planned in detail...it is important to be able to go with the flow, experimenting with and adapting digital marketing activities along the way.

In the world of digital marketing, understanding your brand's current position is the key to boosting sales. You need to introspect whether your brand is well-established or just starting out. This insight will shape your marketing goals and strategy. Generally, marketing unfolds in three stages: 1. Awareness 2. Consideration 3. Conversion You should align your goal with your current brand's status to set a realistic direction for growth. This approach not only drives long-term profit but also prevents unnecessary cash burn, ensuring a more effective and sustainable marketing journey.

Although it involves different (digital) tools, digital marketing's success factors are not new. Armed with identified target market segments and audiences (the people/roles); understanding of the product/service's differentiators; success comes down to the messaging. That demands research into the terms targets use digitally. And an understanding of why customers buy your product/service or another is needed. This requires marketing messages that resonate with the target audiences. First objective is to get attention (eyeballs). From then get engagement. Both require compelling messaging using the terms targets use. Support that with excellent digital analytics. That requires skills in analytics. Test terms, analyze, refine, retest...

If you run your digital marketing activities without any research or consideration for your audience, you'll find very quickly that you've wasted your marketing efforts and budget. In this day and age, consumers expect marketers to be authentic, transparent and relevant. Without understanding your target audience's journey, pain points, needs and preferences, you can't possibly create relevant content at the time they need it. Ultimately, consumers don't want to be bombarded with ads, emails or social posts for products or services that they don't care about. While I'm a strong believer in "running your own race", it's also important to monitor your competitors and ensure that your brand and marketing efforts are distinct from theirs.

Getting to know your audience and keeping an eye on your competition is like having a compass and a map to guide you on your journey. It's not just about running ads and posting content; it's about connecting with the right people, at the right time, saying the right thing and staying ahead of the game. Boosting sales isn't just about creating more campaigns, but smarter ones – campaigns that are relevant, engaging, and so personalized that they feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch.

Personalize to break the clutter at which ads and campaigns are planned for digital audiences. If possible please push campaigns basis what learning you have so that there is more action from the user. Create segments based on interest and click behaviour.

It is not just about the product. It is also about the service that you offer to your client. After sales service & support is just as important as your product.

Email Marketing: Build a mailing list and send personalized, engaging emails. Use promotions, exclusive offers, and storytelling to keep your audience hooked. SEO Magic: Optimize your website for search engines. Research and incorporate keywords that your potential customers are likely to use. This boosts visibility and drives organic traffic.

The attention of the world is on the phone & on 10 social media platforms, for any target market. Strategic organic social media content is the biggest opportunity to grow any business. With the way algorithms work a piece of organic content that you create & post for free, has the ability to be watched millions of times... for free! There is currently no bigger opportunity for any size business to reach their business goals than strategic organic social media content.

Where to advertise? There are tons of platforms available. Think like this, 99% of the free sites and apps are available for advertising, and it's your duty to choose the right platform. Understanding your customer makes it easy to choose the right medium/channel/platform. If your target audience is teenagers, TikTok and Instagram might be a good option. If you are targeting professionals and if you are reading this you know which platform is best to target professionals.

I believe in an omnichannel approach where you find those seeking your content on various channels. Content can be re-purposed to fit the various channels and you don't have to make completely new content for the many channels available. For example, one video can be modified to fit various streams. The key is to become efficient and then get your word out to as many people as you can. Of course, spend the most time where your biggest audience hangs out. Build trust, share knowledge, and pull them towards your business.

The answer is in your positioning, product fit and willingness to show how good you are in the way you communicate your services in your emails, ads, etc. Poor messaging equals zero. The factors such as timing and where and how you present the product and yourself can make a difference. It would be best to show what you are good at. Talk about your strengths, and make them believe you are there to start a solid relationship between your brand and them so you eventually you create trust, resulting in loyalty. For example, if you promote a Saas trial and it requires a demo, it's better to target a webinar where you can show them what, how and why it is worthwhile buying it. So the right channel isn't the main factor, imo.

Choosing channels based on ROI can be a game changer. For example- In certain use cases you will be better off without spending on a particular channel & just reap benefits from the organic conversions. Let me share my recent experience with Amazon PPC where TCOS was 7% but ACOS was over 25%. The incremental revenue from ads wasn’t meaningful for me to continue spending so I just stopped spending on Amazon PPC.

The time and focus of optimization efforts should be divided into 3 components. 1. Weekly: review and optimize within each seperate tool and platform 2. Mid-campaign / monthly: compare results between channels and shift budgets to the best performing 3. Post-campaign: review campaign's final results to determine the right budget allocation mix for the next campaign Each component will have its own set of tools and steps, as well as different teams involved. Planning this 3 step process ahead of time will ensure all teams are operating together towards to the shared objective.

Continuously monitoring and optimizing outcomes is essential. Employ analytics tools to track key performance metrics such as traffic, conversions, and engagement. Analyze data to identify trends, successes, and areas for improvement. Adjust strategies based on insights to ensure ongoing growth and a higher return on investment in digital marketing campaigns.

The optimisation loop is crucial for any successful campaign. In fact data and analysis should lead any campaign. Considering what you have done before. What worked. What didn’t. What was performing what wasn’t! Have you run any AB tests any multi variant testing? The more insight you lead with and pull in the stronger your campaign is likely to be. I would always recommend aligning these with your original objectives and kpis!

Set Up Tracking and Analytics Implement Tracking Tools: Utilize digital analytics tools like Google Analytics, social media analytics (e.g., Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics), and email marketing performance metrics. These tools help you track website traffic, engagement rates, conversion rates, and more. Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Identify the KPIs that are most relevant to your goals. These could include website traffic, bounce rate, conversion rate, click-through rate (CTR), social media engagement, and email open rates.

Old Way: Use tools to analyze and optimize data. New Way: Embrace 'Negative Space Analysis.' In art, negative space is the area around and between objects; in digital marketing, it's the data not being captured by traditional analytics tools. For instance, what about the potential customers who looked at your content but did not engage? Finding a way to quantify this could give you insights into barriers in your customer journey that you never knew existed.

Unpopular opinion - Marketing should increase awareness - brand awareness, product awareness, etc. and is instrumental in boosting sales by increasing awareness but in and of itself should not be ‘responsible’ for boosting sales … thats Sales dept stuff and having a good product stuff … marketing is marketing, sales is sales.
