If you want to be like everyone else, make pie charts, bar graphs, and everything else from the 20th century. It isn't enough to just show information as a raw number in a graph, there needs to be a visually compelling story and for a viewer to be instantaneously drawn to it and be able to draw relationships and infer things from different data points. Books like - Infographic Design: Visual Storytelling with Information and Data by Gingko Press would be a great starting point.
