How can you use data to drive operational excellence?

One of the projects we were working on had a "CAPACITY CONSTRAINT" on the Manufacturing floor and the Company was refusing customer orders due to long lead time for delivery. A detailed analysis of the manufacturing process and a broad time and motion study revealed the areas where the time could be reduced, including the introduction of parallel processing, advance planning etc. With empirical data on hand, the manufacturing lead time could be reduced dramatically by almost 33%. Quite often, people work based on gut and "I know it all" approach. When technical competence is married to a data-based empirical approach, the results are dramatic and visible.

Data is the precious gems in this new world order. Data will show us the path to improve our performance and also areas that need more focus. Data will indicate the performance of the team and resources that need to be directed to trouble areas.

I agree that it is so important to set the intention by forecasting and making a plan to what data you will use and how to drive business operational excellence. I think so often there is the adoption and execution of data without a clear roadmap of how it’s really going to be analyzed in a thoughtful and recurring way to really be effective and sustainable.

Strategy and vision needs to lead above all else. If that is not in place then the ability to implement initiatives that drive tangible business value will be significantly inhibited. It's always important to remember that operational excellence like other parts of the business needs investment, being led by an objective contributor and done through a lens that considers all of business. Data is just a tool, much like technology, AI, ML etc and support the binding together of people and process. Once you identify opportunities it's about building momentum over time and managing the necessary change required to ensure sustainability.

Data is one of the raw ingredients for setting any process , hiring , budgeting, evaluating and designing of the process that needs to be set up. Data helps people or organization that whether they are heading in proper direction or not. It also helps us to take action on certain thing after final product which is achieved from data analysis.

Also, hold yourself, your team and others accountable.....why, you might ask? Any good data scientist or strategist knows you can explain away why metric xx is not really applicable any more, due to changes in conditions xy (usually if the KPI or metric is not favourable!) - you basically move the goal posts after the ball has been kicked...it's easier! For true #operationalexcellence, you don't change the goal posts, you acknowledge the failure, learn from it and then pivot to the next idea.....This builds #resilience and a #continuousimprovement mindset.

Everybody likes a good story so don't just present numbers tell a story!

In my experience and in my opinion, one of the most common mistakes in using data to drive operational excellence is relying solely on quantitative metrics without considering qualitative factors or context. While data-driven decision-making is essential, it's crucial to recognize that data alone may not provide the full picture of operational performance or the underlying factors influencing it.
