At times working for small companies, I’ve had the opportunity (through economic necessity) to handle human resources duties in conjunction with safety initiatives. The simultaneous pairing of the two roles enabled me to gain insights into behaviors, incentives, and motivations I would not have had working in safety exclusively. As a result, trust, empowerment, and teamwork tools were at my disposal on a regular basis to tackle conflicts when they arose. On the whole, this made for a more productive and safer environment for all involved.
