Too often we venture out without an understanding of the anticipated results that are essential to success. Clarity helps to establish boundaries with regard to all resources used. It allows you define your targeted market whether it be for sales, training, hiring or some other event. It will also help to establish the tone of the event and assist with overall planning. Archives need to be promoted. People know libraries and people know museums, but archives remain a mystery for most. Stereotypes are abundant and largely carry negative connotations - archives are "dusty," "obscure," "secret," "forgotten," etc. So, yes, awareness is much needed. Many archives are mobilizing and reaching out to their communities to 1) explain what they are 2) to promote their services and 3) to prove their value. Community events are certainly an opportunity to do at least some of those things.

In the past, I attended meetings of the local Genealogical Society to talk about archival sources that can be used for family history research. Let me tell you -- you don't find more motivated audience than this bunch. At the Galt Museum & Archives, we also run Archives Program - a series of events designed for the general public that help spread knowledge, promote services and just give people an opportunity to visit. In the past, we've run events such as - How to Digitize your Family Photos (hands-on) - How to Research Your House - How to Search for Historical Photographs We've also experimented with virtual events, both live streams and recorded talks. In-person events still attract more participants and offer richer experience.

At the Galt Archives we regularly collaborate with the Lethbridge Historical Society, the University of Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Genealogical Society, The Red Crow Community College, Lethbridge Public Library, local teachers (Heritage Fair), various professional businesses (ex. environmental assessment research), local newspaper and television, and, of course, the municipal governments in the region.

Then I researched [West Dunbartonshire Heritage Library], heard, recorded and retold stories from both the young and old in the community.
