Be the voice of your peer group (or one of the voices, if there already are existing ones). If your goal is to show your superiors that you are ready to take on the role as a leader - you can start by taking on that role informally. That includes the advice given in the article (listen well, collaborate, etc), and things like speaking up and being an influential person in the group. And it also includes being able to succinctly communicate the group's collective decisions/needs (even when you disagree with them) to others, such as the group's superiors. By becoming the voice of the people around you, you're signaling both your ability to communicate as a leader - and that your peer group already accepts you as one.
