And so, as with Illustrating Operas produced by the San Francisco Opera, I familiarize myself with the work and then move through my images and separate those that strike me as illustrative of the themes or impression of the work. Then, I focus on the best representation. I also trust myself because it is sometimes indefinite. Once, I created another when the image I had chosen was too detailed to be placed on a T-shirt. Dead Man Walking was the opera. There was a bad guy (a friend as the model) presenting a bouquet of blurred roses. Some were falling. Black and white except for the roses, like blood.

Be very, very careful that you don't run afoul of copyright law. Long ago, I snatched a photo off of Google because it was gorgeous and absolutely made my point visually. The quality should have been a warning sign that it was done by a professional photographer, was protected by law and should be compensated for its use. That lessons didn't come home to me until I got a demand letter from one of the big publishing houses that I had violated copyright law and please send $900 forthwith. It was an expensive lesson. It's much cheaper to purchase images from a photo service. If you use lots of images regularly, sign up for whatever deal makes sense for you. If you are just an occasional user, buy the images individually.
