How can you use co-teaching as a mentoring strategy?

Co-teaching was successful in my team for the following the reasons: 1. Every team member knew that he/she is valued 2. We had a common agreement on how we would carry out the lessons when it was co-taught 3. Ideas/strategies were shared, then tweaked to best suit the learning needs of the students 4. Everyone took turns in delivering/facilitating the lesson at some point in time. For example, one teacher gave out the instructions, the other helped to hand out materials, both teachers roved to check on student understanding during discussions/written work. 5. Most importantly, my team respected and trusted one another, knowing that we would be supported by one another.

I was extremely fortunate to start my teaching career as a co-teacher. This gave me the chance to basically apprentice under him, and he was excellent about getting my opinions and sharing his thought process. While it can cost more to do co-teaching, it is the best forms of mentorship (assuming the mentor co-teacher is good)

You get to learn something new from the other person which probably you may not have known, thereby expanding your knowledge. One person does not have all the knowledge. So co-teaching provides that platform for exchange of knowledge.

For example, knowing that both co-teachers are dedicated to helping students learn as best as possible, forms a strong philosophical foundation and shared respect with each other. With shared respect and trust, nearly all challenges can be overcome. That was what made my co-teaching experience to be so valuable when I was first starting to teach.

Although co-teaching can be challenging as mentioned above, it's crucial to outline the objectives of the teaching. This will guide the planning and also help the people involved in the co-teaching to have a common ground and work towards achieving the planned objectives.

This is perfect. I will like to add that working as a team is important here from the process of planning to delivery. Effective communication is also very important. Supporting one another irrespective of your philosophy or background is also one best practice that can bring about trust in co-teaching.

Small Group Activities: During play-based learning or hands-on activities, the co-teachers can divide the students into smaller groups. One teacher can focus on guiding and facilitating one group while the other teacher works with another group. Differentiated Instruction: Co-teachers can collaborate to differentiate instruction based on the diverse needs & abilities of the children. They can provide additional support to children who may require extra assistance or challenge those who are ready for advanced activities.
