Don’t design sharp edges if a 1/32 radius or larger will work. Time is money! Getting a sharp edge in a lathe takes extra tooling and takes more time.
I’m a machine shop supervisor with over 25 years of machining background. Too many molds are made before consulting with the people who actually have the machine the castings. There is little consideration to adequately “stocking” the part. It is not unusual for aluminum to shrink as much as .060 inches in certain areas of the casting. The casting doesn’t consistently clean up in that area. The mold now has to be modified. Next, castings are sawcut and ground manually. This leads to inconsistent surfaces that the machinist needs to reference off of. Please do this consult! Save everyone time and money. Discuss how the part will be held. What are the datums and critical dimensions? Will custom tools be needed? Packaging? Timeline? Etc
My first step would be to ask the engineers and designers to engage with the machinists BEFORE finalizing the design. I would expect a better design that was easier to manufacture. As a bonus, all parties to the conversation would learn from each other. And I know that Purchasing practice makes this difficult. Any ideas?
