Identification and analysis of risk is key, but an often neglected component of effective change management. Start with a clear understanding of the goals of the project derived from the company's strategy, project charter and other supporting documents. This step will help ensure you understand the "where are we going and why" and are able to readily develop context for the risks. This will help when you present these risks to leaders. Derive risks from interviews with key stakeholders and ensure your interviewee sample is diversified across business units, departments, etc. Use a proven tool to support your analysis such as the Composite Risk Index that scores Severity of the impact of the risk and the Probability of the risk occurring.

5 Develop the change impact plan

The final step is to develop the change impact plan, which is a document that summarizes the findings and recommendations of your impact assessment. This plan outlines the actions and resources needed to implement the change successfully, and should include the scope and objectives of the change, stakeholders and their needs, current and future states, gaps and changes between them, risks and opportunities, mitigation and contingency plans, change management strategy and approach, activities and deliverables, roles and responsibilities, timeline and budget, as well as metrics and indicators. Developing this plan helps to communicate expectations for the change while guiding and monitoring the change management process.

CIA result also help me plan how much or how little communication I need to have with my stakeholders. As if I see a huge impact with a particular stakeholder group that immediately informs me that they would need more engaging. It also directs me on how wide the gap is that would need closing through training, comms etc

Change Impact Assessments have helped me create comprehensive training curriculums. These assessments form the base of the entire training plan and any deliverable I create, I always fall back on the Change Impact Assessments to check if they are aligned to the current and future state and the gap we are trying to bridge.
