Badging is a unique way to recognize one skills. They enable everyone to understand the profile of the individual. You can also get a feel of what is the experience and interest of an individual. They also make you proud as many certificates which are earned get into files and folders and you find it difficult to handle. Digital badges can be easily verified too. There is one challenge I want to highlight which may confuse the young students, Given some badges are free to earn (surely after doing the education / activity around it) it confuses people on the path they have chosen, so I feel there should be more and more tagging around each badge like validity, area of specialization and other level of recommendations.

Shy away from badges just based on completing something. Students have to earn it by doing something, not just experiencing something. Mix it up with knowledge checks, quizzes , puzzles, open-ended challenges, and tasks. This not only teases them to continue learning but engages different parts of the mind. Let some criteria be constant and some dynamic. If one badge was earned for accomplishing one thing, then the next badge should be different with increased difficulty and time. This can also be done by offering a variety of badges. For example, one can be for completion, while others are harder to get and require completing something.
