How can you use AI to optimize education?

It's fascinating to see the myriad ways AI enhances our learning experiences. Drawing from personal experience as a student, I've found unconventional yet highly effective methods of leveraging AI for self-directed learning. For instance, while platforms like ChatGPT are often utilized for content generation, they can be powerful educational tools. I embarked on a learning journey with ChatGPT and mastered cloud computing, bypassing the traditional tutorials and videos most turn to. As a result, I am now adept at crafting ML APIs swiftly, a task that once seemed daunting to me. This underscores the potential of AI not just in structured educational settings but also in personalized, self-paced learning experiences

I view AI as a powerful classroom tool that makes learning more interactive, helps teach media literacy, generates customized or personalized lessons plans, and saves teachers, tutors, and mentors valuable time.

Now this is such an interesting concept and topic in education and has been part of my AI dabbling. What we know is that each student learns differently and it's evident BUT it has always been tough to try and customize my teaching to suit all students. I have been testing with using AI - specifically ChatGPT to assess my student learning ability based on the types of questions they ask and depth of creativity they show. Hear me out: Try and have you students learn a topic and then present on that topic to the class or a group. It will be challenging but once each student learns how to ask better questions and to critically think, the AI will adapt to their preferences in learning. Disclaimer, this is limited to text.

Therefore, it is crucial to strike a balance between utilizing AI technologies and preserving the vital human element in education.

From my experience, AI's personalized instruction is a game-changer. It adapts to my learning style and pace, making me feel like I have a mentor guiding me. This individualized approach boosts my confidence in my ability to continue to learn new things as an older learner. I also feel that AI empowers me to take charge of my further education.

AI is like a tireless assistant, always ready to take on routine tasks. Imagine it as a teacher's sidekick, marking hundreds of papers with equal precision or a diligent student's friend, generating tailored quizzes to help them revise. It can even be the busy school administrator's best aide, streamlining scheduling without the pesky human errors.

I use prompts like the following in ChatGPT, Bard, Bing Chat, Claude 2, etc., and then copy/paste into Canvas: Create a multiple choice test with <number of questions> questions on <topic> with a <1 to 10> out of 10 level of difficulty. After generating the questions/answers, make sure the test is formatted like this: Question? Correct Answer Incorrect Answer (not very obviously incorrect) Incorrect Answer (obviously incorrect) Incorrect Answer (very obviously incorrect) The correct answer will always be the first option after the question. Don’t number the questions or the answers, only put a line break between questions.

So far I have been using Ai for giving feedback that is well structure and clear. I have been playing with grading and assessing student comments but I have not found that to be trust worth yet. The exception is for constructive feedback that Ai generates for me. I am a great communicator but AI just has the ability to convey my messaging to students in a way that I have never been able to do. It's crazy to think but with Ai, you can have it tailor to tone and intent to the students unique needs while still getting across the important feedback and insights they need.

AI can be used to help analyse student behaviours, which is quite impossible for teachers to check for every student. Other than this AI can help teachers make quick decisions on Student Exams by Automatically Ranking and Checking the exam papers.

As someone who has witnessed the impact of AI, automation is a lifesaver for teachers. Grading papers and managing administrative tasks can be time-consuming, but AI takes the load off, allowing teachers to focus on what they do best: inspiring students.

All legitimate concerns, but I'd like to take this in a different direction. Many educators have raised concerns that the popularity of generative AI tools like ChatGPT might bring about "the end of the essay" and have other negative effects on the effort students put into their own education. While that's fair, I find this to be a greater indictment of an outmoded education system than it is an indictment of students or learning. I believe it's incumbent upon educators to proactively integrate generative AI tools into the learning process *by design*. Students must learn not only how to use these tools, but how to think critically about their outputs and when, where and how to integrate those outputs into their own work and thinking.

One of the major challenge in today' AI is the requirement of large datasets and data centres which ultimately requires lots of energy to run and train those models efficiently. So in order to get more sustainable and efficient AI models we need such model which have self reasoning capabilities and will require less amount of data to train. We can do that by advancing the reinforcement models and one of the possible solution can be with quantum computing which can provide a machine self learning capabilities with less amount of training data.

How I look at this is that currently AI is merely a tool in my teaching arsenal like microsoft word or powerpoint, albeit a very powerful tool. In my experience this past year using AI and seeing where it helps me and hurts me in the classroom, I have found that it is very good at helping my draw conclusions and create content at an astronomical rate BUT the biggest challenge I see is that AI is the "perfect always willing, always supportive tool" and that is not good because as we all know, not everything it produces it correct and people/teachers need to take ownership of what is being created - ownership in the form of critically thinking and understanding how this tool can be used by them, and used by their students!

Stop... make sure you read this!! This topic thread talks about responsibility and ethics, inclusivity - all important but what about the big elephant in the room... AI will change education as we know it. Think about it, we will not be replaced as teachers but our role will be even more defined as the access to information is even more easily consumed. The challenge with AI is all of the things mentioned but I would think those are all symptoms of the larger challenge of change management and how AI will play on our impulsive laziness. I have read so many Ai generated papers and most of them are so bad but students are trusting and not critically thinking about what they are reading. It sounds good, so it must me. Dangerous!

A challenging example I have thought of is the integration of AI in a particular learning application. Since not all learning solutions are the same, integration AI needs careful consideration. When done right (selecting the right platform), it could enhance the personalized learning experience and improve student's engagement.

I would compare AI to other tools we have encountered in our journey towards productivity and enablement. Take the example of a Calculator, it is something everyone would use to do basic mathematics, however as a child we still need to learn how to calculate in our minds or on paper. The case with AI is similar, children still need to learn comprehension and creative writing, knowing fully well that at some points in their lives they will just be able to use AI to do the same. To summarize, during early education students need to learn the fundamental maths, english and science and during higher education they need learn the one tool - AI that can do it all for them and make them more productive.

Or maybe you're stuck on math - no worries, AI could connect you to a math whiz halfway around the world for help. Plus, imagine a learning buddy who knows your strengths and weaknesses and customizes lessons just for you. That's how AI can level up the education sector! It's like your personal classroom, but way cooler.

I built an entirely new course this past summer, well disclaimer, it was an existing course that needed to be revamped and aligned to new content and trends. Typically that would take me a substancial amount of time with ChatGPT I was able to streamline the process and make new connections/iterations of my ideas 100X literally, 100X faster. I was able to better align the content with the learning outcomes, better align the assessments to the course and natrual flow of what was needed and freshened it up way quicker. Now I had a process of vetting everything step by step but even with those safe guards, I was able to do the work of 10 of me and that was exciting and empowering. AI will never replace me but I can see how we can utilize it.

By leveraging the power of Quantum computing, in future we will have more advanced AI systems in future. e.g. in discovery of new drugs we need strong simulations systems which is not possible even with today's most advanced supercomputer but quantum computers can simulate those simulation in fraction of minutes which ultimately helped a lot in advancing and making of new drugs in future.

AI offers a unique way to manage career progressions. Linear career progression follows a structured, sequential path within a specific field. Nonlinear progression embraces flexibility, allowing for changes in roles or industries. In linear progression, AI can optimize the route to advancement, aligning skills with career goals. In nonlinear progression, AI identifies cross-industry opportunities and skill overlaps, guiding individuals through diverse career objectives. Whether streamlining a traditional path or navigating a complex, adaptive one, AI's personalized insights and recommendations are transforming the way individuals approach career development in the modern workplace. 'Skilling me softly' is the new reality with AI.

AI is a powerful tool, that's a fact BUT AI or Humans on their own are not as powerful, resourceful, impactful as AI + Humans working together. With the assistance of AI tools I can finally inspire my students more with the value of creativity and authenticity. AI is a powerful tool and that can't be forgotten. A Hammer can't do it's job with out the Carpenter while AI can do many tasks without Humans.. but how good is the value of those automated tasks. Some are probably amazing while others are still limited by the missing element that is humanity. I am so excited for my career with the use of AI as a tool because I can see that I will get better, be better and create a larger impact as I too, can be an adaptable Chameleon with AI.

One thing I find helpful is to view AI as a tool in the service of humanity. We must avoid relying on AI too much or we would become lazy, which could adversely affect our creativity and human ingenuity.

There have been recent examples where schools have used AI to detect if students have used ChatGPT to do their homework. In some cases, students have been wrongly accused of using AI and had suffered the consequences.

Instead of focusing on what happens on a day-to-day basis within schools, you can consider the bigger picture. We can use AI to find out why certain countries perform better compared to others in the field of [X], this can then be used to reform our own country's system to focus on the weaknesses, and maintain the strengths that we have.
