3D modeling in urban planning, geomatics, and AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) offers enhanced visualization, allowing stakeholders to easily grasp designs and spatial concepts. For an architect, 3D modeling is now a mandatory presentation technique if compared to the past years. Except for a very limited portfolio of employers, no concept project done in 2d will be recognized because it is not sufficiently understood. The mass effect, which is easily comprehended by an architect due to the education he has received, should only be presented to the employer by 3D modeling. 3D modeling is the only method that can simultaneously explain the perception of space, the contribution of the material to the space and the functional relationships. The existence of the BM system has already become indispensable today due to the development of this method.

In my opinion, the word "3D Modeling" is not the correct word to define and understand the 3D/4D/5D/6D/7D BIM requirements and it's utility. If you are intended to do the BIM modeling for project control and management, it should be called a "3D Engineering Design & BOQ Model" to understand the project BIM requirements of the clients.

I started to work in 3d in 2000 and immediately found it easy and fast. When a technical design is made in 3d, draft is automated and very fast. Once the model is complete, any kind of orthogonal projection, isometric view, section or explosion can be done; no count of components is even needed. Realistic images can be achieved and used in manuals and publications. 3D components can be easily reused and parametric design boosts the design workflow. Even during the assembly of mechanical assemblies, the three dimensional model is very useful to give a more readable view of complex assemblies. Working with 3D CAD gives the chance to easily have models to be sent to 3D printing systems.

When I started in my CAD journey I was started off and introduced to Solid Modeling. Solid Modeling works with three-dimensional shapes. The shapes may vary, but they act together like building blocks. Some of these blocks add material while others subtract, depending on the input. Some programs can use modifiers, working with the solids as if you were physically milling it in a workshop. Solid modeling is fairly straightforward both for users and in terms of computer power.

I use 3D modeling in order to design mechanical assemblies. I mostly model by extruding sketches and combining mechanical features such holes, chamfers and fillets with boolean operations. I use parameters to manage curves and dimensions in every step of the modeling process, from the sketch to the final assembly. In most of 3D cad software, components can be placed with mating constraints, arrays linked to component parameters, and moved in simulations. Even different positional representations can be used so that a sub assembly such a pneumatic actuator, can be represented in rest position as well as in working position.

3D modeling should not be discussed as just an 'option' for architectural innovation or engineering design. Rather, it should be considered as 'must'. If I have to say it for the layman, 3D modeling gives the prior visualization of a 'finished product', before and during the design or architecture process. That is kind of a Magic reality for the end customer, who does not understand the design aspects, but is able to 'see' his end product, while it is being made. Or in fact, being planned.

I'm using Autodesk Inventor since 2012, after working with Unigraphics (wich is now NX) and Solid Edge. Inventor is a mechanical oriented 3D CAD very useful for the design of complex assemblies, components and drafts. It has a good management of material appearances and can be easily customized with its own API in order to boost productivity by automatizing repetitive operations. With the included STEP translator, data can be shared also with people working with other CAD systems. The user interface is ergonomic and intuitive and the heritage of Autocad has given the chance to customize command aliases. I rarely use icons, I mostly use keyboard and keep my attention on the model.

This would be good examples of hard surface simulation. This is a great way to get your feet wet in 3D visual effects and animation. I think the goal of this prompt as well is to remind you, how thinking outside the box can really expand the impact your 3D model has on your scene/portfolio.

In my experience I have found that not all departments are created equally. When working with people you have to know when to ask for more information/details of a job. I have found that you don’t always get all the necessary parameters upfront. In this case one should always analyze the requested design and anticipate potential problems/challenges. Early in the process one should make some simple sketches and have discussions with engineers, lead designers and stakeholders. Clarity and design intent are important early on in the project. I have also found that with 3D, it can be very easy to convey new approaches to a design in short order. You should come up with several iterations of a design and weigh the advantages of each.

When modeling in 3D it can be easy to get distracted by the beauty of 3D models but it's very important not to forget the final scope of this technology. A well done 3D model can be edited, reused and drafted very easily. 3D models can have much more uses than the simple production scope. If a 3D assembly is well modeled and constrained, it can be used in FEM and cinematic simulation and rendering. Be sure to always create your models oriented as per the orientation they will have in the real world, use real colors when possible as this can be a good way to obtain realistic images even without rendering, do not put too many constraints but neither leave unconstrained geometry as it will make your CAD go into errors. Create neat sketches.

Two use cases for 3D modeling that are becoming more prominent are real-time applications, and 3D printing. They both require slightly different approaches to the modeling process, but mostly use your existing skillset. 3D printing maquetes is applicable to any situation where you may have wanted a scale model. 3D real-time engines can be used to create interactive visualizations, and can even be used to generate AR or VR applications that allow you to experience or even inhabit designs at full scale.
