Although, in a broad sense, EDI includes numerous types of interchanges, including e-invoicing and B2G reporting, in this context, EDI refers to the interchange of commercial messages, usually based on industry standards like X12, EDIFACT, or proprietary standards like SAP IDOC. A notable feature of this kind of EDI is the transfer of content without retaining the message format. During transmission, a text X12 message from a customer might be converted to XML EDIFACT for inter-provider interchange, and then to SAP IDOC to be sent to a supplier. If all the mappings are correct, the business data will be transmitted accurately. In contrast, in other applications, a message is a file with an e-signature and must be transferred unchanged.
