The article covers most of the process but this part caught my attention. Charging systems are generally robust and require "force" to fail. As such I would do visual check to ensure all caps are not bulged and PCB, connections etc are sound whilst using any embedded diagnostics to self test. Also before cracking out test gear ask about outages, lightning strikes and other system issues such as tripping. This gives you a living history of the system. Following this you check the battery system voltage and internal resistance with a stand alone system. This confirms the load end at which point you look at using a dummy load to check operation of the parent system. Both check OK then it is safe to say firmware has corrupted and to restore.
