How can you transition from a junior to a senior software development role?

I'd say the best way to go about this is just having experience. Even though we could say it is possible to be a senior software engineer in 2-3 years, it really isn't. To be a Senior Software Engineer you need skills that are only learned working and getting through problems. That is the thing that really separates a senior and a mid-level engineer. Experience.

The difference between a Senior developer and a Junior developer is exposure to real problems. Often recruiters require you to have 3+ years of experience as a junior developer. The whole idea is that as a Junior developer you would have undergone the Full-stack process : HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Responsive Design, React.JS, Data Structures & Algorithms, API(s), Deployment, Version Control, etc. Your hard skill is not enough to transition into a Senior developer. You need to horn your leadership and soft skill as well.

Just work experience and upskilling in different areas such as database, integration, project, agile usually provides that. But it is necessary to develop soft skills too like leadership, negotiation, interpersonal, communication, working under pressure, results oriented and others skills. The fastest career progression that I have ever seen for that was 2 years but the person was very smart and mature.

Become an expert in your main programming language or technology stack. Practice writing clean, efficient, and maintainable code. Keep learning and challenge yourself with harder tasks.

Having a solid grasp of the basis is very important. I recommend being a master of DOM manipulation, HTML, CSS, Version Control, and Debugging.

Make sure you have a strong foundation in the core technology and programming languages used in your projects. It will include proficiency in languages, frameworks and databases used in your projects. Always keep up to date on your core technical skills.

A bit of caution when following trends. New technologies can become a distraction. You need to have priorities, and evaluate the pros and cons of these technologies. Most importantly keep learning, and be aware of the trends. Example : With the AI trends in 2024 you might want to consider learning python.

A medida que pasan los a?os, nos hemos encontrado con muchas tecnologías y retos. En mi punto de vista es importante de validar las tecnologías a usar antes de empezar un nuevo proyecto. A diario salen nuevas librerías, servicios cloud, frameworks e incluso lenguajes. Cada proyecto tiene sus propios requisitos y retos, es importante tener un visión global de las tecnologías actuales para saber que tenemos a disposición para sacar el mejor rendimiento, time to market y coste tanto de desarrollo como de infraestructura.

En mi punto de vista es importante conocer al empleado, sus intereses y gustos dentro del ámbito, nos facilita guiarlos y plantearles cursos y estudios adaptados individualmente. Es importante escuchar los planteamientos de cualquier integrante del equipo y dar espacio a opinión. Invitar a todos a que participen en las reuniones y darles oportunidad a colaborar para que puedan desarrollarse.

I believe ownership itself is misunderstood among majority of developers. If you're working in a team it must be a collaborative ownership. I would not disagree that one should take ownership of his work, but I think it is highly important to take ownership of the impact your work will have on other's work. Before jumping into a feature/fix, one should take a step back and analyse the areas where the impact of his changes can have, and be prepared to blend the logics/implementation accordingly to avoid potential bugs. When you're in a team, you just can't say "Oh this was not in the requirements to check this." If you say so, my friend, you're not a team player, and way far to be a senior ever. Seniority comes with ownership, not years.

Show initiative by taking ownership of projects or features. Be proactive in identifying and solving problems, and be accountable for the success of the tasks you undertake. Demonstrate leadership qualities by proposing improvements, suggesting optimizations, and taking charge when challenges arise. Senior developers are expected to be self-directed and capable of making decisions that contribute to project success.

While managing your time, and coping with requirement changes you should also be striving to achieve a balance between speed and quality in software development, it entails the implementation of various testing methodologies such as unit testing, automated testing, and end-to-end testing. These measures are critical in ensuring the overall quality of the software being prepared for deployment. Consequently, by adhering to these standards comprehensively, your application's performance will excel, distinguishing it in terms of efficiency and functionality.
