For this question the simplest answer is PRACTICE. The more you practice better will be your understanding with the features and capabilities of the software you are using for your modelling. Also try designing different models with the software that's also a way you can achieve expertise in CAD.

I believe that consistency and practice are the keywords. Don't settle for one accomplishment only. While your perfecting one skill, start brainstorming on the next one.

If you are someone that works under a strict NDA having a portfolio may not be possible. Don't let that stop you from keeping track of your accomplishments. Keep an extended version of your resume with all the projects that you have worked on. This can be shortened to be more specific depending on the position you are seeking.

When it comes to 3D, there are many paths to venture. Being a character modeler, a specialist in material or animation, there are many. So as a start-up 3D artist you can explore and find what is right for you and you can learn a lot on the way with experiments and expanding your knowledge. if I am sharing my personal experience, I used to do 3d architectural visualizations, many years ago, but now after exploring and learning, I have become a person who loves to do 3d cartoon animation with character building and story writing.

Learn new skills and be upto date about your latest technology. Follow a mentor who had same passion towards their career, that is same as you. They have a better knowledge on the path where you want to travel. Dont waste your time go and find your mentor.

Consistency and professionalism is key. Being able to systematically solve problems as they arise is important as you progress as an artist. Each project presents new challenges and you should hold stock of solutions, to reuse in the future. With time and training, you should have systems in place to find timely solutions. Including when you need additional support.

Well from my experience I've always understood that sometimes you have to truly listen to the client's vison, because what is professionalism without communication, at a junior level, I used to get rebuked for assuming what I think it should be, instead of getting to connect with my consumer and how they will receive it. Remember modelling is art and you are meeting a demand and solving a problem.

Absolutely seek new opportunities to grow your skillset, ask your company to allow you to go to expos, attend seminars, attend courses, trial-run software that may improve your day-to-day tasks as a 3D modeller. There are vast amounts of online tutorials, how-tos to learn from, and if in doubt open the software use it like a modelling space, a “sketch book”. You are not only improving your own skills, but become an asset to your company.

This question is a bit too vague, as 3D modelling for visual purposes uses different software & techniques and has a different purpose to 3D modelling for CAD work. However, if you are doing modelling for CAD work, think about how you structure your model (including construction elements). Things like sketches that are not fully dimensioned and an excess of planes show a lazy and/or inefficient modeller.

Look around and see what your industry is demanding. Get inspiration from other people's art. Observe what they're doing. Looks at their old artworks and see how they progressed and see what skills you need to learn and improve to reach at their level. Also PRACTICE!

Learn from old drafters. My ability both to model with fabrication in mind and to produce a good two dimensional drawing for a fabricator from a 3D model was greatly enhanced by a draftsman who learned his trade with pencil and paper in the early 60s. He could teach me nothing about 3D modeling itself, but he is probably the largest single contributor to my skill as a modeler today.

Depending on what kind of work you do, it can be helpful to build an inventory of stock 3D items. This can improve the overall quality of a model and can help with efficient use of time on new project. Example- Standardized components. I personally create standardized components for any part I expect to use more than 2 or 3 times. This way I can import from my personal library rather than spending time recreating something over and over.
