How can you thrive in a data science team?

Effective communication is paramount for data science teams, grappling with intricate data, algorithms, and stakeholders. Articulating data origins, techniques, outcomes, and advice cogently is vital. Active listening, questioning, and feedback are crucial. Proficient communication prevents misunderstandings, nurtures trust, and cultivates teamwork. In a realm as multifaceted as data science, strong communication is the cornerstone of success.

In my experience, it depends on the level of seniority, each level having different criteria for standing out: - Junior members should focus on acquiring strong fundamental knowledge and be curious about the business problem they are trying to solve, something I’ve seen lacking in early career professionals - Senior associates will stand out by their breadth and depth of technical knowledge, the ingenuity of their solutions, and their influence on the team - At manager level, members will gain the most recognition by their ability to work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering and stakeholders, managing expectations coming from the top, while keeping a high throughput from his team and also being influential on the roadmap.

Data science is to have the ability to communicate. Communication skills or presentation skills are equally important as technical skills. I call them storytelling skills, that is that you have your analysis done, now can you tell a great story from it? If you have a very large table, can you synthesize this and make it more appealing that when it goes on the screen, or is it part of a document that it just speaks? It sings the findings and the reader just gets it right there.

When I started with data science, I was wondering how I would be able to survive in such a fast paced field. Old tools make way for new ones much faster than any other field I have worked at, Data itself changes over time due to data drifts or concept drifts and you'd need to closely follow the metadata(data about data) over time. Data science is not just about exploring data, but also about presenting findings to stakeholders. So sharpening your language and presentation skills is a must if you are to thrive in this field. Afterall data scientist is a lifelong learner

Engaging in creative collaboration indeed offers a remarkable avenue for acquiring knowledge, embracing diverse perspectives, and broadening one's cognitive horizons. It serves as an instrumental conduit for honing problem-solving abilities within a nurturing and encouraging environment. It is so easy to get lost in the details when you are looking at a dataset and unravelling it's mysteries. Also, it is important to make note of the directions and results from a data science exploration. Oftentimes, the result of a datascience exploration might make the time gone into that analysis look much less than actual time spent to the stakeholders. So putting breadcrumbs to retrace your approach is a good idea. Data scientists have to take a step back from time to time, looking at the bigger picture, to make sure that the time allotted and the direction of approach makes sense to the business needs.
