When building for AR for social platforms its equally important to consider which medium to use. Lens Studio (SnapChat), Spark AR (Instagram and Facebook) and Effect House (TikTok) all have their own superpowers and limitations, some of which being size limit of AR experiences and capabilities (such as ML, Raytracing, etc). Each of these platforms brings unique audiences as well, so understanding your customer and how they interact with your brand is equally as important when choosing a platform.

QA is a very important part of the process for AR Apps and experiences. With complex AR experiences its important to test on new devices, old devices, on different operating systems (iOS / Android) and with different versions of the OS. Real world testing is important to gain user feedback about functionality and the performance of the AR. A good app to use for beta testing is Testflight which can help distribute AR apps to users before you launch them

When testing AR on real devices, it is important to define what range of devices you are aiming to have a really great experience on. Most devices from the last few years are AR capable but some have more features than others. On real devices you will get a better understanding of if you may have to scale back certain effects on older devices. Simulated devices are useful but you may not discover some performance issues and bugs in your AR experience until you are running on an actual device.

Getting user feedback may be the most important part. No first version of an application ever survives contact with a real user. They will use your software and hardware in ways you cannot imagine and show you a variety of ways to misinterpret your instructions. Getting feedback from a diverse user base early on is crucial not only to validate the value proposition of your application but also to see how your application works with different users (for example, one of my apps had trouble tracking hands when the colour of the skin was not white - a bug I only found because I invited a diverse set of users to test my app!).

When using a new technology like augmented reality, user feedback is critical. Seamless customer journeys and frictionless experiences will be vital for augmented reality to hit mass adoption and to create a "spatial UI" that will make it easy for everyone to participate. Getting feedback from a range of users, in different locations, with different device types will inform later phases of development and create insights for future projects.
