How can you tell if your employees are happy with their jobs?

There are lot of ways to have one to one meetings and to track metrics. But for me, I would go beyond surveys and tp have open, honest conversations with employees, both individually and in groups.

I was a happy employee for 11 years, I think you could tell I was happy because I came in early, I always said good morning to others, I had the flexibility (and trust) to do my job if you just left me alone. I truly love the industry I'm in, and I don't view it as work. Maybe more people would be happier if they found/did what they truly excel at instead of being stuck where they are (or what they majored in or studied forever in, to ultimately be unfulfilled). It's never ever too late to change course and seek a new career path. Have you noticed a change in the employee, they don't want to be in the office as often, they're less engaged? Why? Arrange a catch up meeting with them, firstly check whether they're ok and what support you can provide. Ask the difficult questions, are they looking elsewhere? Why? Is there something missing from their role? Don't hide behind somebody's engagement shifting, tackle it head on to avoid them leaving!

Organizations can install a touch screen based happiness indicator a la they have in retail outlets, where you capture how happy you are post the shopping experience. We can have it installed both sides of the in/out gates in office to capture how people felt while entering and how they feel when they step out of office.
