I'm encouraged by the responses so far. The only instructional technique I suggest is to use text with real-world relevance to the students. Similar to high interest, but students experience what they have read when they leave the classroom.

Ignite critical reading with fire! We usually choose high-interest, relevant texts like blogs, podcasts, or even social media. We spark pre-reading with provocative questions and invite diverse perspectives. We allow our students to give annotations and graphic organizers dance with the text, revealing biases and connections. We craft debates or mock trials around controversial topics. Don't forget the joy of creation – let students rewrite scenes, build alternate universes, or create art inspired by the reading. We need to keep in mind that curiosity and collaboration are the keys to unlocking engaged critical readers! Do you? Don’t?

And to add onto this, using texts that are suggested or prompted by students is an effective way to get them collaborating with you in the classroom. It’s their education, invite them to contribute to its content.

In my brief experience of fostering positive learning environments for youth to grow and love learning, I found it most helpful when tailoring the comprehension to their level of understanding. This could look like giving them other options to explain what they just learned. Whether it be creating a song, drawing a picture, creating a skit, writing a rap etc., appealing to their learning styles in all aspects of learning not only stops when you have finished facilitating.
