One way to ensure that you have a successful mentoring program is to create an arc of development for mentors. It's essential to support the mentors as well as the teachers. I've seen many instances where teachers are assigned a mentee because they are great teachers. However, being a great teacher for children doesn't always translate to being a great mentor for adults. Sure, some skills are transferable, but it also requires different skills. Therefore, learning more about andragogy and adult learning strategies can help mentors be more effective.

To my friend Joselyn Whetzel-Roy... don't forget that gathering data and evaluating that data without the input of the teacher is "data in a vacuum". Working with teachers and students you have to keep in mind that we are all human, and as such, just doing data evaluation is missing the human factor. Where outcomes not achieved because the teacher saw a need to connect socially and emotionally with a student, was the teach compromised because they were put in a place where they couldn't be successful regardless of effort. This is what makes teaching an art and not a science.

When I was new to mentoring, I was a much harsher judge of teacher quality and set the bar very high - to the point that it seemed too far away. I was very stingy with teacher evaluation scores when I started. I got away with it for a while with a small team as I had hired just about everyone - I could establish this kind of expectation and culture… but as I moved up in the company and around to different places, I realized I could not do this anymore. You have to work with the existing culture and move things step-by-step, otherwise the resistance you encounter will be counterproductive. Partnership for incremental but continual change and improvement is much more sustainable than imposing overly-high and seemingly unreachable standards.

Professionally trained mentees can really add value and empower those they are coaching/ mentoring. Professional learning communities are also a fantastic mode of mentoring in bite sized chunks. Though stringent considerations need to be taken into account, in terms of the mentee training, time considerations, professional boundaries and the aims to be achieved through mentoring.
