I believe like many difficult conversations it's important to know if someone is looking to vent, or seeking advice. That will determine how to listen. It's also important to listen through their lens, as if you were in their shoes. It takes energy, and can't be a passive or distracted conversation. Carve out the time and reduce distractions. It'll show the student you value what they're sharing with you.
