1 Choose the right platform

Not all online learning platforms are created equal, and some may be more suitable for your ELLs than others. When selecting a platform, consider the following factors: the language and accessibility features, the ease of use and navigation, the compatibility with different devices and browsers, and the cost and privacy policies. Look for platforms that offer multilingual options, text-to-speech and speech-to-text functions, captions and transcripts, and adjustable font sizes and colors. Also, test the platform yourself and with your ELLs before using it for your course, and provide clear instructions and tutorials on how to use it.

2 Design inclusive and interactive content

The content of your online course should be relevant, engaging, and diverse, and cater to the different needs and preferences of your ELLs. To design inclusive and interactive content, follow these guidelines: use simple and clear language, avoid jargon and idioms, and explain any acronyms and technical terms; use a variety of media, such as images, videos, audio, and animations, to illustrate your points and appeal to different learning styles; include interactive elements, such as quizzes, polls, games, and simulations, to check understanding and reinforce learning; and provide multiple options and choices for your ELLs to demonstrate their learning, such as written assignments, oral presentations, portfolios, and projects.

3 Provide clear and timely feedback

Feedback is essential for any learner, but especially for ELLs who may struggle with language and communication in your online course. Feedback can help them monitor their progress, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and improve their performance. To provide clear and timely feedback, follow these suggestions: use specific and constructive language, focus on the content and the learning objectives, not the grammar or spelling errors, and use positive and encouraging words; use different modes of feedback, such as text, audio, video, or live chat, depending on the type and purpose of the feedback; and provide feedback as soon as possible, preferably within a week or less, and allow your ELLs to ask questions and revise their work based on your feedback.
