1 Use a test plan

A test plan is a document that outlines the scope, objectives, methods, and criteria for EDI testing. It serves to define what should be tested, how it should be tested, and how the results will be measured. Additionally, a test plan helps to communicate expectations and requirements to trading partners, vendors, and customers, ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Elements of a test plan include the types and sizes of transactions to be tested, the EDI standards and formats to be used, the test scenarios and cases to execute, the test data and tools needed, the test schedule and deadlines, the test roles and responsibilities, as well as the test reporting and feedback mechanisms.

2 Use a test environment

A test environment is a separate system or platform that mimics your production environment, allowing you to perform EDI testing without affecting live data or operations. This environment enables you to simulate various types and sizes of transactions, test different scenarios and conditions such as errors, exceptions, delays, and changes, and isolate and troubleshoot any issues or defects before they impact your production environment. To be effective, a test environment should have the same hardware and software configuration, EDI integration and mapping capabilities, security and encryption protocols as the production environment. Additionally, it should have the ability to generate and manipulate realistic test data, as well as monitor and track test results and performance.

My experience is that much testing needs to occurs prior to the actual UAT test. Many environments are validated, testing these environments is generally scripted in a way to ensure success; however, it isn’t the breadth of testing required to discover down stream or lower volume process defects. Ensure the text environment is refreshed and actually reflects the production environment from ERP, middleware and vendor system.

A test automation tool is a software application that can help streamline EDI testing by reducing manual effort, human error, and testing time, and increasing test coverage, consistency, and quality. In my experience, I have learned that your test cases should be built to test for failure as well as for success. Testing needs to take into account data that will fail the interchange and how this will be communicated to users.

EDI skill sets are fairly rare form j terpretinf how a field in EDI translates to a business process. Fore example, an order could come in for a country that isn’t a current market country or a non-expected date format. The EDI owner must have a working relationship with the business to not only pass that the data can transfer, but that it makes sense and improves the business process.
