How can you stay up-to-date on environmental policy changes?

Whether you are a practitioner in the environmental field or in government affairs, newsletters are a fabulous way to start your regulatory and policy tracking practice. In addition to the obvious ones - EPA or agencies in your field - think about signing up for trade association blogs and newsletters. In my region - Latin America - the trade associations are often invited to be a part of regulatory and policy development. They have their finger on the pulse of emerging requirements for their members. Get in on that expertise by finding the association for your sector and signing up for their offerings.

LinkedIn is a great place where people share the latest updates in their industry. You can find a couple of content creators or just someone who posts regular updates in HSE industry to stay up to date with the latest developments. It is impossible to be aware of all the news just by yourself and relying in the collective knowledge is a much more pragmatic approach.

In my opinion LinkedIn is one of the best SM to be on, especially because of the intellectual knowledge that is openly and graciously shared on here. I follow several accounts and groups of professionals that I would ordinarily not be able to network with, this in turn provides me with up to date information from their content which effects the Enviro field.

Social media has become one of my favorite ways to stay abreast of developments. The principal agencies in each country in Latin America have X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts - many are on Instagram and Youtube as well. Just one example - Mexico's FDA-analog - has a new very successful Youtube channel posting great content on the policies around regulated products. LinkedIn is the best social media for occupational health and hygiene professional as it brings together the international community of dedicated individuals. Some people post regularly some occasionally, but if you've built a good network of several thousands connections you will continuosly receive a relevant and up to date news feed from your network.

Webinars are great for learning the latest development or simply refreshing the knowledge on a common subject. Luckily there are plenty of free high quality webinars available to HSE professionals and many big brands will support speakers organising these events to cover their expenses.

All great examples of how to stay up to date OSHA, TJC, CMS and monthly or annual publications. There are two very overlooked resources out there, IEHA-ISSA and AHE certification programs. These programs offer the latest updates in technology, trends, innovation and education to keep you learning and informed. Many companies overlook them because of cost. However once in and invested, both are easily maintained through CEU's and an annual fee for membership. I have been a IEHA, Certified Environmental Services Executive since 2014. The last 3 years I have maintained the cost on my own.

The Annals of Work Exposures and Health is a great knowledge of the cutting edge resource in the field of occupational hygiene and is freely available to all BOHS members.

Another often overlooked option when looking for reports is to find theses written by masters and doctoral candidates on specific topics. Often these are found on Issuu or just through a thorough Google search. Finally, for in-depth publications on environmental issues, don't overlook the work done by the OECD and UNEP - both have different filters for their analysis but create thoughtful important work.

Through one of the associations that I am involved with, I was introduced to the Cambridge SDG courses. These are online courses that provide international-related information with respect to various environmental and sustainable topics. Had I not been on these courses, I would not have seen how the legislation differs among countries and how the SA legislation compares to the founding agreements. These type of online courses definitely benefit us environmental practitioners.

Attend webinars and online courses on environmental policy. These platforms often bring together experts who discuss the latest developments in the field.

In an organizational context, one thing I've found helpful is to organize a regular signals sharing exercise. During all-hands team meetings which are held every 2 weeks, we would call for 4-5 volunteers to contribute at least 2 emerging signals on sustainability topics relevant to our domain into a master slide deck. To ensure that we identify a broad spectrum of signals, we would use the STEEP (Social, Technology, Environment, Economic, Political) framework to organize them. Every 6 months, we will review this master slide deck and identify the driving forces behind some of these signals and discuss their implications on our work and ongoing strategy collectively. The act of undertaking this exercise has widened the lens of the team.

Some governments will involve citizens and various stakeholders in policy making processes. 3) Follow parliamentary discussions. Legislations are usually passed in parliament.

Join a professional body... This is critical for moving forward with the profession You will get information that is curated and checked, support from other professionals, a formal CPD system, training, a path to chartered status, and much more...

As an environmental Practitioner in South Africa, I am a member of our Environmental Law Association. Even though I am not an attorney, this is one of the best associations that I have found because they do not only focus on the law behind the environment, but the environment, training, upskilling, and education. Other associations provide updates only once the legislation is published, out for comment, or promulgated, the ELA provides updates throughout this process.
