I agree. Staying up to date to the new technology available can provide us the insight and this will help us to identify the key differences between the old and new technologies. For example, some people still using CRA which can be used only for client side while there’s Next.js available for both client and server sides. Therefore, learning new technologies can make us more relevant in my opinion. We’re expanding both width and depth at the same time too.

You can use them as a playground to experiment with things outside of the usual developer routine. On the other hand, the insights from personal projects can also find their way back into the company. Therefore, it is also worthwhile to publish your projects on platforms like GitHub, GitLab, etc, or to document the insights in a LinkedIn post.

Your personal projects can be your litmus test ground where you implement what ever new technology you've learnt before putting out on the job. Person projects are avenues for you to roll in the mud then come out clean on the job as a software engineer. Remember the bug you encounter and fix in your personal project fortifies you against related problems on the job. Hence your personal project is your number one training arena.

You should embrace the idea of performing proof-of-concepts. Success/failure is a secondary outcome. Applying new technology in your personal projects gives you that opportunity. Medium: optionally and may be relevant for more senior software developers since requires skill in technical writing. It's okay not to update LinkedIn on every major change/achievement but what I do instead is write awesome stuff I accomplished in my notes to not forget how cool I am. Then, next time I have time for LinkedIn updates - I just transfer things from my notes. These notes also help you during the annual performance review to showcase yourself. Otherwise, it may be hard to remember what you've been doing throughout the whole year.

En mi opinión, no hay que olvidar que la tecnología es un medio, no un fin. Por tanto, me resulta imprescindible que el aprendizaje sea enfocado a cómo resolver problemas y no a la tecnología per se. Antes de ahondar en una tecnología particular, recomiendo responder, al menos, las siguientes preguntas ?qué problema(s) existe(n)? ?qué tecnologías podrían ayudar a la solución del(los) problema(s)? ?en qué casos conviene usar una u otra tecnología?. Con esta mirada, creo posible lograr una mejor decisión a la hora de profundizar en una tecnología.
