In my experience, the constraints of our technology tools often dictate the scope of the projects and questions we believe we can address. The magnitude and intricacy of the data types frequently guide us towards pathways that permit us to answer only segments of the overarching question. Consequently, we tailor the project's scope to fit within these boundaries. To truly innovate, a shift in our thinking is essential. Echoing Albert Einstein's words, “You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it,” we must look to adopt emerging technologies to overcome these challenges and answer questions we didn't even know we could ask.

To study any GIS project, we need, before starting, to determine the project objectives and what methods we need to reach each objective, and thus determine the needs (staff, hardware, time, software, etc.) and study the possibilities, and thus create a complete guide for the project that includes the initial plan to complete the project.

Part of documentation involves outlining your data. Outline your data schema's structure as well as project's folder structure to ensure that you can return to files later on in the future even after the completion of the project. Also having a folder for archive or scratch data in the front end of planning will assist in managing retracted data that is no longer in use or to clear storage space.

If we are in any role of GIS, we all will agree to the fact that it is incomplete without the involvement of Database Management; so as we create/use geodatabases or .gdb files in our regular work. As per my experiences of working to several national/international projects, it's critical to maintain a proper database containing appropriate file and folder naming system to keep our projects and work to be organized. Additionally, I would recommend all the new and/or experienced professionals of our domain to clean/remove unwanted files or folders and keeping the versions of work with date, which will definitely make your life your life easier. Additionally, organizing data in a knowledge graph enhances discoverability and usability, providing clear insights into data relationships and optimal uses. If developing new or building off of existing standards/procedures, take time to compare your workflows to see where improvements can be made or if you're ahead of the curve. Not one standard is the same and they are always changing. Document methodologies big or small to see what best practices are most efficient where to see where modifications need to occur.

One thing that I have found helpful is to create focus areas for the next few months and to create weekly and daily to-do lists to prioritise the tasks that need to be done. This helps in balancing the workload, sets realistic expectations both from ourselves and the others. Asking for feedback on the work in a regular manner also helps us keep in check and revise our deadlines, technical gaps and more opportunities.

"Under-promise, Over-deliver". Managing client expectations by providing expert opinion at an early stage is key - the more they know and understand the overall challenges ,workflow, and end results, the more likely they are to be supportive and receptive to changes and delays down the line - more often than not , clients do not entertain challenges. Do not be satisfied with meeting the minimum requirement - go over and beyond by showing them insights about the data that everyone would normally miss. An example for geotechnical monitoring involves not only locating the movement and providing data and trends, but identifying which elements/structures move together and if environment/weather plays a role in long-term movement trends.

A “GIS Career” can take one through many industries. Having a growth mindset and honing lateral thinking is crucial because often times what’s applicable for a certain industry or even a line of business within maybe extrapolated to adjacent industries. Critical thinking and reflection also plays an important role to apply lessons learned in new and innovative ways. All this eventually leads to the ability to take abstract concepts and bringing them to life through systems thinking by connecting the dots using one’s collective, lived experiences. Keeping up to date on technology frameworks is foundational because a robust and scalable GIS is very much dependent on a robust tech ecosystem that is highly interoperable.

Primero, se debe si o si, entender el objetivo y alcance del proyecto ya que esto permite definir con claridad el flujo de trabajo, para esto es útil los diagramas cartográficos y los arboles de problemas; seguido, enmarcar los estándares a cumplir, para ello se puede apoyar de una lista de chequeo; a continuación; el manejo de la información debe ser rigurosa, si la información es abundante se recomienda usar prefijos alfabéticos para nombrar a los insumos y agregar sufijo numéricos para los resultados, de forma que la continuidad númerica, permita localizar de forma inmediata en que parte del flujo del trabajo esta, adicionalmente se recomienda automatizar procesos respetivos con scripts de forma que se reduzca errores involuntarios.

Keeping detailed notes is very important, I like to put the date, the overall goal of the work day, and the tools ran in their order, with locations of the outputs. I also include “issues” or errors I come across and document how to solve them. Another helpful tool for detailed notes is exporting the history of your project session in ArcGIS.
