How can you start a career in historical research?

Certainly start with a topic or era that interests you. Some historians stick with an era their entire careers. Others explore and change direction. There's so much to learn! You might also find out you prefer a more niche area such as sustainable preservation.

You should also consider to write articles for journals, starting with some papers for university journals open for students, work on little-researched or completely non researched topics, become a specialist in an area that has not been researched, to work everyday on your analytical skills. Analyze everything that you are reading, hearing. In addition read everything relevant about the topic that you are researching, if it possible.

I can't agree more on finding a topic that is little known and becoming an expert on it. I also agree with writing on the topic or others to develop writing, analytical, and research skills. Offer to write for free or for a local historical agency. Volunteer for your local historical society or serve on a board that does the work you're interested in. These volunteer experiences can enhance your education and gain skills.

Education is the backbone of historical writing. Research is essential along the way. It will be imperative to your success. Read, study, and write as learning is never ending. Contribute online and to periodicals. Analyze and interpret. Take into consideration everything around you. Every opportunity broadens your skills. Practicing your writing can’t be stressed enough.

At first I was hesitant about LinkedIn, but as I've pivoted in my career, I see it now as great resource to network and reach out to others I would not otherwise know in the field. Again, reach out to your local historical agencies to find partners and ways to develop your skills in history. Education and degrees are important, but gaining experience and building your skills is crucial.

Networking is a great way to meet people, share ideas and collaborate. Bouncing ideas off one another can help both sides with ideas they have been struggling with on various projects. Getting input is a time saver and motivational driver. Joining organizations and volunteering are great ways to be involved and give back to the community.

When I was in undergrad, I searched for anything and anyone that could help further my career goals. I had many internships throughout college and I also volunteered with the state to gain experience. I found that if you voice your interest to those you want to learn from, then they're more than happy to help you. Don't be afraid to cold call businesses to ask if they are looking for interns or volunteers. The experience is what will set you apart when you go to get a job.

Regular practice of simply putting words on paper helps to build your skill. The process involves ferreting out thoughts and ideas, incorporating contextual information and building upon what you know as well as incorporating what can be found along the way through your research. Every project gains further insight into the past.

If you have the means, seek out member organizations as well as online opportunities to receive certifications in the fields and topics that interest you.

Seeking opportunities will improve your knowledge of the past and better get your name out there. Get your feet wet, find out what you enjoy and what you want to be involved in. Every field or industry is just a little bit different in terms of guidelines and methodology; there is so much to learn!
