- Understand what is the problem you need to solve, who is impacted. Sometimes you focus in a single command line/config and forget that it's part of a whole process. Be sure you know what you are impacting and who you are impacting before changes.

Being a network or systems admin is not just about the machines. Bringing those skills to an MSP, such as mine, there is so much more to consider. Every decision or action taken has to be in balance with client needs, end-user ability, best practices, security requirements, policies of the client business, policies of the MSP, vendor needs, and even hardware constraints. When approaching prospective clients, I try to be as open, honest, helpful, and sincere as possible while avoiding industrial jargon / tech-speak. Leave the arrogance at the door. No one likes being sold to. So ... try just helping. Earn trust. Give something of value to be remembered in a positive light.

I find the ability to graphically represent a network on a white board or in Visio can empower execs to contribute more to the design. I can architect any kind of network, but if it doesn't solve real issues and look to the future, it is not as good as it could be. When my clients can visualize what we are discussing, they seem to confirm easier that we are on the right journey, together.
