Single sign-on (SSO) can be a great first step in simplifying the end user experience. In order to ensure a good experience, you must test the SSO implementation and solicit feedback from end users in order to provide a more optimal experience. Often when SSO is deployed poorly, it can result in a poor experience for the end users. When implemented properly, it can streamline user workflows and increase there productivity when moving between applications.

Implementing SSO for multiple applications is a convenient and secure way to simplify user access. It reduces the need for users to manage multiple sets of credentials and enhances security. To enhance security, it's a good idea to combine SSO with MFA, such as using security keys.

SSO is not necessarily a way by which business can make user authentication more secure. It's difficult to argue that SSO will actually improve security unless it is reinforced by mature defences such as highly developed SOCs, comprehensive MFA, and a clear SSO strategy that ensures that security and business teams are aware and have planned for the risks and potential collateral damage from having SSO's compromised. If you run a security environment with highly differentiated and segmented network, bundling access to services of various levels of confidentiality, availability and integrity requirements could undo your work in other areas. SSO needs to be reinforced with defence-in-depth, data access minimization and updated attack paths

Arguably the fastest and simplest way to authenticate users on an application is to use Single sign-on (SSO). It does takes away the complexity of creating an authentication system from scratch and also makes it seamless for users to signup and login to an application. Users could just reuse their already created accounts without the need to remember another credential set. Though SSO brings in obvious advantages like added security, reduced costs and improved user experience it also has several disadvantages like user privacy where the (IDP) identity provider (like Google) could track users across websites quite easily. It also adds an additional layer of dependability of the application to rely solely on the IDP to authenticate users.

From my experience using hardened credentials such as Passkeys and FIDO U2F can help increase security while providing a better end user experience. Consider testing multiple passkey / password products and make a selection based on both security and usability.

If you're an average business facing typical criminal attackers then you're likely only ever going to be attacked remotely as coming into close contact with your business would be difficult for the primarily non-western based threat actors and risky for western threat actors. This means you should rely on MFA methodologies which focus on something which is harder to replicate virtually or remotely. Eg: Biometrics and hardware tokens. The issue with knowledge based MFA for example is that employees tend to re-use the same secret questions constantly and these have likely leaked in the past and may be freely available on the Darknet.

Typically we think of MFA as a text secret code or use of an authenticator app, so these are based on 'what you have' authentication. There is a lesser used authentication type, 'where you are' which is extremely effective. As an example our Email as a Service uses the users IP address to limit access to sensitive data. So this has several affects, first if a credential is stolen, it's no big deal, the thief cannot log on unless they are at the approved IP location(s). Second, 'where you are' does not require user input, it's a silent authentication. Third, if there is a data breach an entire company can be immediately locked down with 'where you are' authentication so users can continue to work safely while keeping a hacker out.

There's a huge difference between multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods and two-factor authentication (2FA) methods. If you are using SMS or an authentication app to verify yourself, then you risk what's called a man-in-the-middle attack. If you use a security key instead, such as a hardware key or your phone, you eliminate this security threat.

When adversaries adapt so should security measures. Adaptive authentication is a step in the right direction which assesses and adapts user authentication methods based on a multitude of factors like user analytics, historical data without compromising much user experience. It uses contextual information and risk assessments to determine the appropriate level and type of authentication for each attempt. It enhances security by constantly adapting to various parameters and potential threats while aiming to provide a seamless end user experience for legitimate users while blocking out illegitimate ones.

In addition to implementing Role-based Access Controls, organizations need to continually prune access to critical systems where a users access is no longer necessary. This will help reduce the likelihood of insider threats while reducing an organizations overall attack surface.

I need to stress the importance here. Most companies are attacked through the faults of one of their employees or even by one of their employees themselves. Ensure need-to-know and need-to-have for all employees, and quickly remove all access if they leave the job.

Concept of simplification of user authentication has evolved over the years as threats become more sophisticated. Authentication had to become more stronger in order to provide better protection. There is no single & straightforward process to cater. It completely depends on the information we are trying to protect. So as authentication level and importance of data go hand in hand, complexity of authentication is directly proportional with the criticality of the data. With the increase need for privacy, complex passwords and MFA have become very common. NIST recommends passwordless or Zero Trust design to increase security. To summarise, simplicity is no more a requirement as consumers do understand the importance of data.

Considering both the end user experience and security is a must when implementing SSO and MFA. I suggest taking the time to become intimately familiar with the authentication options available and sit with the end users to better understand their current workflows and frustrations. This will allow you to optimize for both security and usability.

As security professionals we can sometimes become overly focused on the purely security aspect of our recommendations and solutions and forget about the business and risk management. The security of each company, business line and indeed each service is dependent on a complex set of factors including criticality, safety, compliance and so on. What security professionals should do is work with risk and business functions to ensure that security is appropriate and reasonable but most of all a business enabler that will allow our organizations to provide the highest possible value to their customers. This could mean that in critical infrastructure OT systems, security is as high as it can possibly be and authentication is extremely strict!

Striking the right balance between security and user experience is easier said than done. While attacks have become more sophisticated so should user authentication mechanisms but one has to keep in mind that you are only as strong as your weakest link
