First and the foremost thing is to understand your target audience to the core. Do analysis, conduct research, know pain points and power points etc. It’s always a win situation when you talk in your customers’ language. It’s important to connect on an emotional level.

To write for a brand, first grasp its audience's identity, struggles, and ambitions. Content must echo with the audience, offering solutions and motivation. Employing buyer personas, journey mapping, and surveys yields a deep understanding of the audience's desires and habits. This knowledge informs content that resonates on a personal level, ensuring meaningful engagement and influence. Every word should align with the audience's voice and their journey towards their goals, ultimately guiding them to the brand's solutions.

The first thing is to understand your audience in depth. ? Have a conversation with them ? Ask relevant questions ? Do market research ? Know their pain points and goals ? Map their journey The better you know your audience, the better you can convey your message. Make sure to write content that is relevant to their pain points and answer their questions.

Waving a big blank flag in the air isn’t going to attract any ships toward you. You have to know deeply who you are trying to attract. Who they are, what they do, their likes and dislikes, pains and struggles - everything. You have to be neck-deep into the pool to get a good glimpse of the water body. So many just dip one foot in and pretend to have measured the entire pool. The very reason why it’s so important to know your target audience is because once you let the message out, it will become loud and clear in the minds of the people you’re targeting that the message is only for them and they would go, “Dude, this is ME!” Once that thought hits their mind, they’ll run to you to learn more.

Then why should your writing carry the same intent while writing for brands whose tonality and texture are worlds apart? Look up their past billboards, ad headlines, landing pages, etc., and swim through as much as you can in their brand messages. Once you’re clear on the tonality, you may have the authority to write something kickass for their customers.

Consistency in tone and messaging builds brand trust. Imagine a friend who changes every time you meet them. Would you trust them? Probably not, and the same applies to brands. From M&S to Greggs, every brand has its own unique voice. There is plenty out there to gather inspiration from and all give brilliant examples of tone and consistency. If you're in a new role, explore brand guidelines and past content for tone and language. I find creating a persona for this voice really helps. Someone that embodies the brands essence and resonates with the audience. Using this character as your anchor will create unified and impactful communications, resulting in both recognition and most importantly, a real human connection with your audience.

This way, you stick to the one style that you know the audience enjoys and relates to the most.

My advice is to forget about yourself. I can't stress this enough: content marketing is not about you; it's about your audience. I have a problem with the title of this collaborative article. It is that when you write for any brand, your focus should certainly not be on showcasing your writing skills. It should be on getting the brand's message out in the most effective way possible. This means aligning yourself with the brand's positioning and voice. Think of creativity and value as a graph. Creativity along the X axis and Value along the Y axis. For some brands and use cases, you can be low on creativity but absolutely cannot be low on value. E.g. a state of the industry report. For others, you need to be high on creativity because the value is delivered elsewhere. E.g. a social media campaign around a sale.

In my experience, having a strong and diverse network is key. Anyone can do desk research, but having access to experts can be the point of difference in your value and filling in any gaps you have in adapting to new brand personalities.

No matter how good my writing or how proud I was of my work, other people have ALWAYS helped me make it better.

Some questions to ask that provoke direction from the viewer include - what do we want the reader to do after consuming this piece? - how do we want the reader to feel after reading? - in comparison to other pieces that are favored, what do they have that this is missing? Answers to discussion based questions can be helpful in each stage of the creative content process. Consider adapting the above to use after work is completed and used.
