It is also important to share these goals with your students to help them understand why the routine exists and what it helps them achieve individually and as a class. Sharing these goals creates buy-in and allows students to be proactive in the maintenance of the routines. Remember, your students want to be successful, so sharing the goals for your shared space helps them have agency in their own and their peers' success.

Also get the pupils to coauthor your routines with a bit of promoting as that also adds to the buy in process . You can then refer back to the class rules with any misdemeanours as the class created these rules .

2 Choose your routines

Once you have your goals in mind, choose the routines that will support them. You don't need to have a routine for everything, but focus on the areas that are most important and frequent for your classroom. For example, you might want to have routines for morning check-in, attendance, homework collection, materials distribution, group work, independent work, clean-up, dismissal, and so on. You can also have routines for specific subjects, activities, or situations that require special attention.

3 Teach your routines

Don't assume that your students will know or remember your routines. You need to teach them explicitly, just like you would teach any other skill or content. Explain the purpose and benefits of each routine, model the steps and behaviors involved, and provide examples and non-examples. Then, give your students opportunities to practice the routines in different scenarios and contexts, and provide feedback and reinforcement. You can also use visual aids, such as posters, charts, or checklists, to remind your students of the routines.

Visual supports will help remind students of the routines without you constantly having to verbally tell them. It also allows you to easily change depending on the situation for example different voice levels depending on the type of class work happening.

In addition to having written reminders (signs/chart paper) of the routines, I recommend reteaching with a practice run all routines after a long break. It is also important to remember that your students, especially in higher grades, have multiple teachers with multiple routines they have to follow. Approach your routines with grace. It is possible that a young person who is not following your routine is doing the routine for another class or another setting. Gentle reminders (point to the sign with the routine or ask a peer to remind/model the routine) rather than scolding and punishment will go a long way to maintain order in your classroom.

Often upheaval and even disintegration of institutions has resulted from the removal or twitching of a favorite community routine. It's important to get stakeholders to understand that routine should be in service of the goal. Hence the need for consistent rethink and review.
