Nowadays the recommendation would be to use an app like Authy, or for sensitive data rely on a Yubikey or similar, which is a device in which you have to touch it when connected to USB/bluetooth/NFC to authenticate. I would not recommend using SMS as second factor as it is prone to corruption and someone in the carrier company can tamper it. In Brazil, it is a common scheme.

This is a MUST especially for very sensitive accounts (e.g. online banks, personal or work emails, etc.). Hackers these days can easily hack accounts that do not have at least a 2-step authentication enabled.

In my experience, the below might help managing the password efficiently and effectively. 1. Use a good password manager - you can find some free ones or paid ones. Once you get that make sure the password you are generating has at-least 16 characters and includes the special characters as well. Also make sure that the application has mobile version of it so that it syncs across all your devices. 2. Change your passwords regularly- I think changing passwords every 6 months is great and always keep a tab on any data leaks (hibp or other tools might help) 3. Use 2FA or MFA where supported so that it adds an extra layer of security. It can in be in form of OTP on your phone or Authenticator Apps. Always check you account activity for logins.

If I would recommend one important thing is: The most important credential to protect is your email. Use different emails for general use, financial apps, etc. This segregation improves protection and reduces blast radius. If possible, do not have access to your important email accounts in the smartphone as it can be stolen. Maybe use a proxy service for that. the first thing an attacker will do is try to compromise your email. Why? Because if they try all the services that you use and click on forgot password... where the new password will arrive? Make sure your email is the most secure place. Protect with MFA, ip restrictions, Yubikeys, etc.

Additionally, think about securely storing backup codes, using biometric authentication where available, and regularly reviewing your accounts for any suspicious activity.

I would recommend using an online-offline method. What I mean is, store your usernames on an online app, and store your passwords offline (e.g. written on a journal or a separate app not synced online, with labels that only you can understand). This way, it is almost impossible for a hacker to gain access to your account unless he or she has both.
