In my experience the research before actually starting to apply is crucial. Knowing the trends, the average salary for the position and the saturation of the market can (and probably will) change your point of view. Especially when changing the industry. Let's consider the animators salaries in games industry and the movies industry - they're definitely not the same and that's just one of examples. The more you know about the situation the better overview of your options you will have and sometimes it might even occur to you that your current job is not really that bad when compared to others.

Know your worth! It's important to recognize that the salary conversations are just that...still conversations. If you need more time to review materials, or think about an offer, let the recruiter know. There's always a balance between what is realistic for the specific company and what is desired from the candidate. But good recruiters know to not blindside candidates and to allow for time for candidates to make decisions. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself in regards to amount and timing to review the offer.

If you're a concept artist do not reject working with games editor (to set up the scene for a screenshot that you would further overpaint f.e.). If you're a 3D generalist don't shy away from using Photoshop to create your own textures and so on. Yes, you should acquire new skills in your selected path but be open to cross-discipline medleys as these can improve your process.
