There are varying OSes, tools, and technology that may not function properly with those implementations. For example, what may work in your IT environment may not work in OT/IoT space. Make sure that when you do have to deviate from the compliance standard, that you follow proper exception processes and document these findings. Don't forget to add these exceptions to your risk register as well.

This requires training, creating real in person training has been the most effective in my experience. When people can work through live scenarios, ask questions and interactive with the security team, this enables them to walk away with actionable examples during their day to day, that will help protect the company.

Make policies resilient to outside factors like changing business conditions, layoffs or fast growth, cloud transformation programs, etc.
