For me, metrics create a foundation for strategy conversations. If we're ahead of where we wanted to be, there can be a conversation about if we want to add in something we didn't think we had time for, or if we just want to steam ahead, knowing that eventually we'll lose some time to something that takes longer than anticipated. If we're behind schedule, those metrics can often tell us what resources we need to get back on track. Metrics can help diagnose user concerns and answer questions, but really, they need to serve the conversation and salient points, not be them.

Too many reports don't summarize effectively. If someone had two minutes to understand what the metrics said, what would you tell them? Maybe everything is great. Maybe you need another resources. That needs to be the first thing in the report, and the data should be visualized to support that main claim. Nuance can come on pages two and three, and should likewise be supported with well-visualized data.

Sometimes the data is bad news -- customers don't like the product. Customers only use the product for 3-6 months and then they are gone and it's just how it is. Or maybe the product as envisioned is going to take two more teams and another year to go to market. Bad news happens, and frankly, figuring out how to deliver that effectively is a critical skill. Own the real conclusion of your data every time. It will make you stronger.
