I'm a journalist who covers vulnerable communities. My advantage is that I grew up in a few of them. We moved in and out of several neighborhoods of financially struggling Black families, and ours was no exception. So, my reporting approach is to let vulnerable distrustful sources feel in control, since much in their lives is often out of their control. I acknowledge their distrust of media, the reasons for it and my desire to report on them fairly. I ask them for guidance on how to do hat. I explain the story, and why I want them in it. One of the basic requirements to doing good journalism is to prepare well for interviews, covering events and meetings. It’s a different matter for development issues & spot reporting. Preparedness will help tackle sensitive matters in a humane and professional manner. It will remove any unwanted bias too.

The vulnerable populations can have a big impact on how they are perceived and treated by the public. Avoid labels, slurs, or terms that are derogatory, stigmatizing, or inaccurate. Instead, use language that is respectful, dignified, and humanizing.

Descriptions matter a lot and influence readers perceptions too. Therefore being sensitive in labelling challenged person is very important. Physically challenged, visually challenged (blind), hearing challenged (deaf) are some of the usages which are gaining more acceptance and can put the person at ease.

Reporting on vulnerable populations and their issues requires not just reading but a comprehensive understanding of the social context. While writing up a story one should not over simplify or exaggerate the issues with a bias or slant towards their handicaps.

In my personal opinion, it is very important to supply to the targeted audience as thorough as possible in order to raise awareness, but at the same time provide as few as possible personal details on the population so that to protect their integrity and ego. But what is most important is that everything published on vulnerable groups shall be on ethical and respected mediums.
