This is necessary when using Adobe Audition or similar programs. This is a good reason to capture "room tone" on the shoot during the interview so it gives you a solid sample of just the noise in the room. It's easy to overlook that on the shoot though with all the other things to consider. However with the advances in AI implementation a lot of software like Adobe Podcast, Clarity VX, or Voice Isolation in DaVinci Resolve has eliminated the the need for a clean sample. You can get really great results from utilizing these new resources as long as you don't "overdo" it.

Most editing programs will have quick options to help you clean up your background noise. Often, these tools are based on the type of noise you're dealing with. Are you hearing too much chatter or the sound of outside traffic? Using the “Denoise” effect may be enough. However, audio issues come in all shapes and sizes (or, I guess, frequencies and waveforms). Thankfully, there are also specific tools for taking out buzzing, ess-ing, pops, and more. Knowing how to use limiters can also help. Above all, know that editors love sharing their tips and tricks, because they know what it’s like to have to work magic on terrible audio. When in doubt, identify your type of sound and search YouTube for how others are tackling it.

In Adobe audition there is a function to "Capture a Noise Print" and run noise reduction where you can isolate the noise you are trying to eliminate just as long as you have a prolonged period of video that has that particular noise. This is also why it's important to capture room tone.

Definitely the biggest key is to not overdo it. You want to clean it up the best it can be but when you go overboard it sounds off & will ruin the effect. This is where newer AI solutions like Voice Isolation in DaVinci Resolve, Clarity VX, & Adobe Podcast can help get the best possible result. These solutions can be overdone as well so take what you can get but don't push it too far.

EQ is most useful when dealing with sustained pitches. Like a ring, buzz or hum. This is often not the case with traffic or background noise from people.

If you will be adding music or ambience back into the final video listen to your final product both soloed & with your backing tracks. Sometimes you can get away with less noise reduction if you add in music or purposeful background noise.

In my experience, utilizing Voice Isolation in DaVinci Resolve gets me a great result 99% of the time. The technology is continually advancing so be on the look out for better solutions as time goes on.
